Recipe for Spicy Arrabbiata Sauce
This pasta night will be delightfully enhanced by this simple and tasty arrabbiata sauce! With only six basic ingredients, it's easy to make and has a rich flavor.
Ingredients (Serving size can be used to modify the recipe)
1. Three tablespoons of butter or extra virgin olive oil
3. One little yellow onion, chopped finely
4. Six large garlic cloves, either crushed or minced
5. Two cans of whole tomatoes (28 ounces each), ideally San Marzano
6. ½ cup freshly chopped, roughly chopped basil leaves
7. One teaspoon of sea salt
8. Half a teaspoon of newly ground black pepper
Ingredients for Sautéing: In a large saucepan, heat butter or olive oil over medium-high heat. Sauté for approximately two minutes after adding the crushed red pepper flakes. Add the chopped onion and simmer until it becomes tender, about 5 minutes. Sauté the garlic for an additional two minutes, or until it becomes aromatic.

Cook the Sauce: Add the entire tomatoes and carefully break them up with a wooden spoon. Once the sauce reaches a low simmer, lower the heat to medium and stew it uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring now and again, until it thickens to the consistency you want.
Add the chopped basil, salt, and pepper to finish and season. Adjust the amount of salt, pepper, or red pepper flakes according on taste.
Notes
- Adjusting Heat: For a milder flavor, start with 1-2 teaspoons of red pepper flakes and increase to taste.
- Consistency: If the sauce becomes too thick, add a splash of water or pasta water to adjust.
Enjoy this spicy, aromatic sauce with your favorite pasta for an unforgettable meal!
Applications for Arribbiata Sauce:
This sauce for arrabbiata can be used in a variety of delectable ways! Feel free to use it, for instance, in:
Pasta: Add it to any type of pasta or gnocchi and mix it with whatever other ingredients you choose. This spicy tomato spaghetti with shrimp and sausage is my favorite.
Pizza: Any type of pizza or flatbread will taste great with this sauce. (If you want to thicken it, feel free to simmer it down a little bit more.
Breadsticks, mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers, calamari, toasted ravioli, and more can all be paired with dipping sauce.
Joey Tribbiani-style sandwiches and subs, you know. ;)
